Why do fuel prices vary between retailers?
Every litre of UK fuel includes a fixed cost that no retailer can change, 52.95p in fuel duty plus 20% VAT. What varies is the retailer margin on top. Supermarkets like Asda and Morrisons use high fuel volume and store footfall to absorb thinner margins, keeping forecourt prices lower. Independent retailers and motorway services operate at higher margins, often 8–12p per litre above supermarket prices. Location also plays a role, rural sites and motorway forecourts pay more for delivery logistics, and those costs pass directly to the pump price. The ranges shown per retailer above reflect this variation across their UK network of sites.

- Weekly. GOV.UK publishes the road fuel price survey once a week, covering the week just ended. This page refreshes daily, so it always shows the most recent release.
- Possible delay
- Because the survey is weekly, the figure here can be up to seven days behind the price on the forecourt today, longer around public holidays, when publication slips. GOV.UK also revises figures occasionally after first release.

- These are retail pump prices including taxes. Fleets buying on fuel card, bulk or contract terms typically pay less. Use these figures for trend and regional comparison, not as the rate your fleet actually pays.
