Why does Canadian diesel vary so much by province?
Tax is the dominant factor. Federal excise duty applies everywhere, but provincial fuel tax, provincial sales tax treatment and regional transit levies differ sharply. Metro Vancouver carries a TransLink levy on every litre; Quebec applies QST on top of its provincial fuel tax. Alberta sits at the low end.
Distance from refining and pipeline capacity does the rest. Atlantic Canada and the northern territories carry longer supply chains, and Western Canadian refinery outages can move prices across several provinces at once. The refining-margin column on the table above is where that shows up.
